Production Technology LLC (Protec) recently
supplied all of the sound and lighting systems for the Dubai
International Rugby Sevens, held over three days at the end
of last year.
Nick Chapman, head of the
company's Sound Division, specified Turbosound Impact
enclosures for the general PA in the stadium, comprising 12
Impact 50's, 16 Impact 80's and 12 Impact 121's. Nck
commented: Although using the Impacts may seem an unusual
choice, the results have been fantastic. We fleew the
Impacts to fire sound into the stands, meaning that we had
virtually no audible time delay, which can be a common
problem when dealing with sporting events.
"We ran the system as six zones,
with Crown amplifiers installed underneath the stands to
minimise cable lengths. Rack-wise we used XTA 31-band dual
graphic equalisers, dbx 166 compressors and six Shure UHF
radio mic system, all controlled via an Allen & Heath GL2200
console with Crown V1200 amplification. The impact-based
system proved to be so successful on the Dubai Sevens that
we used an identical set-up at the ATP Tennis Championships
in the New Year"
Protec also supplied a Floodlight
system for the closing concert of the games, which was
headlined by top international Abba tribute band Bjorn Again,
and attracted a capacity audience of over 8,000 people. This
system comprises 12 stacks of Floodlight, flown six per side
wqith Turbosound/MC2 amplification and the new LMS-D6
digital loudspeaker management systems driving the FOH sound,
which was controlled via a 48-channel Midas Heritage 3000
console.
On monitors, a 48-channel Allen & Heath GL4000 console with
Turbosound/MC2 4-way amp racks drove two stacks of
Floodlight on sidefill, and a mixture of TFM-330 and TFM-230
floor monitors. All loudspeaker management systems were the
new LMS-D6 units.
Unusually, Nick and his team have
rigged their 4-way monitor amp racks so that they can be
used with both the Turbosound floor monitors and Floodlight
FOH enclosures make an extremely versatile system.
Additionally, a further 12 stacks of Floodlight and more
4-Way amp racks have been added to the ever-growing
equipment arsenal. |
